Androstenediol

Androstenediol it's a steroid hormone sexual, and is involved in the development and maintenance of the characteristics of the male organism. Androstenediol is therefore a hormone androgen, and specifically represents the quantity of androgens peripherally active (testosterone which is transformed into dehydrotestosterone), metabolised in sensitive tissues into androstenediol and eliminated as such in the urine.

In particular, the 3-α-androstenediol glucuronide, the active form of androstenediol comes to a large extent from the conversion of dehydrotestosterone (DHT) in the skin. Consequently, the 3-α-androstenediol glucuronide can be considered an indicator of androgenic activity at the level of target organs in women, and the biochemical marker par excellence. of hirsutism.

Hirsutism it is a disease characterized by the growth of excess hair on the body, in the areas controlled by androgens and therefore on the face, chest, abdomen and back; moreover, in female people the hair also appears on the upper lip, chin or breast, that is in areas typical of men.

Normal values of androstenediol:

woman 21-67 ug / 24 h (or 71-229 nmol / 24 h)

man 116-270 ug / 24 h (or 417-943 nmol / 24 h)

Increased values of androstenediol

The feedback from androstenediolo high blood tests can occur in some pathologies characterized by overproduction of androgens:

  • Hypernadrogenism
  • Hirsutism

Reduced values of androstenediol

The feedback from androstenediol low blood tests is related to the presence of hypogonadism associated with the following defects:

  • alterations in testosterone biosynthesis
  • abnormal functioning of the steroid 5alpha-reductase enzyme
  • defect of androgen receptors, as in incomplete testicular feminization
  • abnormality of the cytosolic protein that binds to androgen, as in Morris syndrome.
